Experience soon showed that complete lineal formality was essential due to the age of the site.  The garden first opened to the public under the NGS scheme in 1990 and quickly established a reputation for horticultural excellence that made it a magnet for garden photographers and writers as well as television producers.  Japanese television spent a complete year filming the garden in 1999.  This spring 2002 the garden is featured on BBC Gardeners World with Chris Beardshaw (airing Friday 15 March 8:30pm on BBC2).
